Fields to Future

The Fields to Future campaign is an initiative that is focused on unlocking the potential of young minds through education. Our mission is to provide deserving students with the resources they need to pursue higher education, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to become leaders in their communities.

Education is a catalyst for change, and Fields to Future is dedicated to making that change possible for students who face significant barriers to continuing their studies. By supporting their educational journey, we are not only helping them achieve their dreams but also investing in the future of their entire communities.

Fields to Future began with a commitment to one student, Patrick Wesonga, but our vision extends far beyond. We aim to create opportunities for many more students like Patrick—individuals who have the drive and determination to succeed but lack the financial means to do so.

A Journey of Resilience and Aspiration

Patrick Wesonga, the first student supported by the Fields to Future campaign, is a young man whose story exemplifies perseverance, dedication, and the transformative power of education.

Born and raised in Bungoma, Kenya, Patrick faced significant challenges from an early age. When he was just nine years old, his father passed away, leaving his family in a vulnerable position. As the oldest child, Patrick had to step up to support his family, working long hours in the fields while still attending school.

Despite these hardships, Patrick’s passion for learning never waned. He was known for his curiosity and love for books, often studying late into the night by the light of a kerosene lamp after a full day of work. His dedication to his studies paid off as he consistently excelled in school, earning the respect of his teachers and peers. However, as he neared the end of his secondary education, the financial burden of continuing his studies loomed large, threatening to derail his dreams of higher education.

Patrick’s ambition was clear: he wanted to become a high school teacher, a role that would allow him to inspire and educate the next generation in his community. Yet, without the means to afford university tuition, this goal seemed increasingly out of reach.

This is where Fields to Future is trying to make a crucial difference. Recognizing Patrick’s potential and the profound impact he could have as an educator, Charlie Cares launched the campaign to support his journey to Kababii University. Thanks to the generosity of donors, Patrick was able to enroll in the university’s education program, where he is now thriving.

Fields to Future is honored to support Patrick Wesonga, whose story is a beacon of hope and inspiration. His success is just the beginning as we continue our mission to empower more students like Patrick through education, helping them overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams.

The Importance of Education in Kenya

Education is a powerful catalyst for development, particularly in agrarian societies like Kenya, where agriculture is the primary livelihood for much of the population.

In these communities, education equips individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to improve farming practices, adopt new technologies, and make informed decisions that enhance their quality of life. By investing in education, agrarian societies can break the cycle of poverty, boost food security, and drive sustainable economic growth.

Kenya's education system is structured into three main levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary education. Primary education is free and compulsory, with the government subsidizing secondary education, though some costs remain. Despite these efforts, challenges persist, especially in rural areas where infrastructure is lacking, resources are limited, and financial barriers prevent many students from continuing their education. Gender disparities also remain a significant issue, with girls in rural areas particularly vulnerable to dropping out.

To fully realize the potential of education in Kenya, especially in rural, agrarian communities, continued investment is crucial. This includes providing financial support. By prioritizing education, Kenya can empower its people to build a brighter, more sustainable future.
